Steel is a material that is frequently used in the construction sector because it has many benefits, such as strength, durability, and versatility. Over the past few decades, the international demand for steel has more than doubled. This demand, coupled with limited natural resources and the high environmental impact of steel production, necessitate making better use of accessible material by reusing and recycling existing steel.

Recycled steel is a sustainable alternative to virgin steel because it reduces the need for mining new iron ore and the associated energy-intensive processes. Its use decreases the demand for raw materials and helps divert steel from landfills, thus reducing waste.

Recycled steel has been used in framing, structural and reinforcing elements at the HPI d-school Building, thereby achieving at least 50% replacement by mass of virgin steel in its construction.
